From Concrete to Luxury: The Transformation of a Nazi Bunker in Hamburg
Hamburg, Germany — August 2024 — In the heart of the St. Pauli district, a former symbol of Nazi military resistance now stands as a luxury hotel icon. What was once an imposing bunker, built in record time during the darkest days of World War II, has been reborn as the REVERB by Hard Rock, a hotel that blends history, culture, and modernity.
A War Legacy Transformed
Constructed between August 1942 and April 1943 in just 300 days, the St. Pauli bunker was one of the many that dotted Hamburg’s landscape during the war. With three-meter-thick concrete walls and an original height of 34 meters, the structure was designed to withstand air raids, sheltering up to 25,000 people across its five floors. Its military purpose and imposing construction were clear: to protect the population and serve as an anti-aircraft tower with heavy weaponry on top.
Although most of Hamburg’s more than a thousand bunkers were destroyed by Allied bombings, the St. Pauli bunker survived and was repurposed for various uses in the decades that followed. Abandoned but never forgotten, it was initially used as shelter for those displaced by the war and later became a music studio, radio station, and even a climbing gym.
From Abandonment to Renaissance
In 2019, the city of Hamburg, in partnership with private investors, decided to transform this war monument into something entirely new: a hotel that preserves the memory of the past while offering a unique and modern lodging experience. The renovation, which took five years and consumed 100 million euros, resulted in an extraordinary fusion of brutalist concrete and the softness of contemporary design.
The hotel retains the scars of time on its walls but now fills them with 134 elegant rooms, a trendy restaurant, and a rooftop garden that is a true urban oasis. This garden, accessible to the public via an exterior staircase that wraps around the bunker, is the final touch of a bold architectural project that sought to transform a relic of the past into a space of peaceful and modern coexistence.
Memory and Modernity
Upon entering the hotel, visitors are greeted by a permanent exhibition that tells the bunker’s history and pays tribute to the forced laborers who built it under the Nazi regime. Despite the renovation that turned labyrinthine corridors into spacious and inviting areas, the weight of history is still palpable in every corner.
The rooms, while designed for contemporary comfort, retain an industrial design that respects the original architecture. With a palette of vibrant and neutral colors, the hotel embodies the musical spirit that characterizes the Hard Rock brand, with details like wallpaper illustrating CD shelves, vinyl record-shaped tables, and concert posters on the walls.
The lodging experience at REVERB by Hard Rock goes beyond the ordinary. Four of the rooms are reserved for touring musicians, offering not only rest but also a private recording studio. For guests and visitors, the hotel’s cultural agenda includes regular musical performances at the Karo & Paul restaurant, and the future George-Elser-Hall, currently under construction, promises to become one of Hamburg’s premier cultural event venues, with a capacity for more than two thousand people.
A Vision for a Green Future
One of the most notable additions to the project was the rooftop garden, which reflects a conscious effort to transform a symbol of war into a space of peace and reconciliation. With over four thousand trees and sixteen thousand shrubs, the garden is a green refuge in the middle of the city, where both guests and locals can enjoy a panoramic view of Hamburg.
The 335-step staircase leading to the garden has also become an attraction in itself, offering several stops along the way at cafés and restaurants that complement the experience, such as the Constant Grind Café and the sophisticated La Sala.
A Project Without Parallel
Marek N. Riegger, CEO of RIMC Hotels & Resorts, expresses pride in the project: “This development is unparalleled in the hospitality sector. We have managed to combine the unique history of this place with a modern and welcoming proposal that will delight both travelers and local residents. The transformation of the bunker into a hotel is not just a physical renovation but a reinterpretation of what this space can represent for the city.”
With nightly rates starting at 320 euros, REVERB by Hard Rock is not just a place to sleep; it is an immersion in history and culture, an opportunity to reflect on the past while enjoying the best the present has to offer.
Accessibility and Location
Located in the vibrant St. Pauli district, the hotel is easily accessible from Hamburg’s central station. For those traveling from Portugal, direct flights from Lisbon, Porto, or Faro offer economical options to explore the historic gem that is Hamburg. Once there, the former Nazi bunker turned luxury hotel promises an experience that combines memory, design, and culture like no other place.
With this renovation, REVERB by Hard Rock not only preserves but rewrites Hamburg’s history, offering a new perspective on a past that, though dark, does not need to be forgotten.
